Looking for the best types of shoes for the elliptical machines? Then you will found the right page as I will share my experience of wearing different shoe types when working out on these machines. I am a nut when it comes to shoes so I was able to test out tennis, running and cross training shoes on the elliptical machines to test which one is the most comfortable as well as give the best support. FYI, I own one of these small compact elliptical that I recommended in my buying guide.
Is tennis shoes best for elliptical?
Off the bat, I would say tennis shoes in general are not the best type of shoes for elliptical. When you are on the machine, your leg movement is primarily using up and down movements. As such, you want want something that can cushion those impacts and reduce the stress of your tendonitis. Tennis shoes, focus more on lateral support as tennis players need to brake fast and change direction. Hence, I will not recommend using your tennis shoes for elliptical if you can help it. Of course, if you are tight on budget, using tennis shoes for elliptical wouldn’t kill you either.
Best running shoes for elliptical
When it comes to running shoes, it is hard to say which is the best since they are so many models in the market today and everyone’s feet is different. Below is what I think are some choices you can consider based on my purchases as well as from what I have gathered through chatting in the online forums.
Asics Men Gel Venture 5 review
The Asics Gel Venture 5 is one of the most comfortable running shoes that I have ever worn. The reason for that is probably due to the Gel cushioning that this series has. The cushioning makes the impact seems unnoticeable and my feet doesn’t feel tired after a elliptical or running session.
(Note: I exercise mostly indoor so I have no idea how good this shoe will work if you are using it for trail running)
Another thing I like about this shoe is the solid grip on the machine’s surfaces. Whether it is for treadmill or elliptical, I feel secure and stable. The shoe is also wider than the average running shoes and the bigger surface area also and that contributes to the stability as well. If you have wide feet, this model will be great for you.
Finally, the Gel Venture 5 is very light in weight. Despite this, the support feels as firm as other heavier shoes. As I was using it, I never felt the shoe is going to give way.
While Nike is the more famous brand, I would recommend this model over any Nike models. It has all the right feature but costs only a fraction of what Nike is charging.
Adidas Adipure 360.2 review
If you like a cross training shoe instead of a running shoe, the Adidas Adipure series is one of the best in the market. I am reviewing the 360.2 vs 360.3 because I only have the former LOL. I promise you that whenever the 360.2 is worn out, I will buy a 360.3 and test out the difference.
This shoe is very light and extremely stable. I love wearing for my cross fit classes as it gives very good lateral support when I doing the workouts. The cushion on the heel is good and makes the up and down movements of the elliptical pretty comfortable to do.
Because this is a cross training shoe, I used it in the gym beyond just the elliptical machine. For example, I used for weight lighting as well and it provides a solid grip, strong stability and prevents my feet from moving about. Even for light cardio workouts, I used it and it works well as the cushioning absorbs a lot of the shocks from the high impact movement.
For the sizing, it ran smaller for me so it might not be true sizing. In the end, I had to order half a size larger for it to fit comfortably. Also, the design of the shoe is on the narrow side so it is not a good fit for folks with wide feet. If you have slightly wider feet, try going half a size bigger.
Pricing wise, I also find the Adidas brand to be much more reasonable and affordable.
Best women shoes for elliptical
Now we get to the tricky part. The above reviews can be done easily because I owned these and were able to make comparisons to what I have worn before. For womens’ shoes, I have to say I have zero experience in them LOL.
To come up with a list of potential purchase candidates, I did a lot of research and have chosen models that have solid consumer reviews, provide what are needed and are affordable in pricing.
Asics Women Gel Venture 5 review
Looks familiar? Yup, this is the women version of the Gel Venture 5 that I have reviewed. Since the mens’ version is so good, I figure the women version can’t be that bad.
The women version has all the benefits of the men’s shoe. It is comfortable, provides arch and heel support, and has great design appeal.
Salomon Women XR Mission review
The Salomon XR might not as well known as other sports brands but they produced solid women running shoe that is worth a closer look.
This shoe has a great cushioning layer at the sole and heel section that works very similarly to Asics Gel cushioning system. Since I can’t try it, I can’t tell you how the two compare but reviews have been very positive on this aspect. For elliptical, they are perfect as the cushioning can help to soften the impact of any up and down movement.
Another outstanding feature for this shoe is the excellent arch support. I have seen many people with high arches saying good things including comfortable and stable. If you are one of those ladies with a flat feet problem, buying this will help.
In terms of design, the whole brand is famous for its colorful theme. Whether you think that is a plus or minus depends on your personal taste. As a man, I found them to be too loud but some women love it so who am I to judge?
Asics Gel Fit Sana review
The Asics Gel Fit is another winner from Asics. With over 1000 reviews on Amazon alone, of which more than 70% gave it a 4 stars and above. The main reason for such a high score is the comfort that these shoes provide with its Gel cushioning technology as well as the ultra breathable material. The latter makes the shoe very cooling to wear as it allows air to circulate freely.
The shoe is also very easy to wear. It basically functions like a slip in except that you can adjust the lace to control the tightness of the shoe. However, most of the time, you wouldn’t be needing the laces as you just slip in and out of them.
The Gel Fit has more than 8 color themes for you to pick from. I know ladies like to have matching shoes with their outfits so you should be able to find a color that suits your needs.
Finding a good shoes for elliptical is not easy as there is no such category in the stores. However, most running and cross training shoes are sufficient. The only type of shoes I don’t recommend are tennis as they are built more for lateral rather than heel support.
